Building Schools: Sowing the seeds of goodness in humanity
BUILDING SCHOOLS IN COLOMBIA
Through this programme, the Foundation builds, adapts and equips schools in very remote and vulnerable areas. These areas are home to diverse communities, including ethnic minority groups and Indigenous Peoples, who live in vulnerable conditions in largely forgotten and isolated rural regions.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Over the past few years of social intervention aimed at improving educational spaces, we have achieved the following milestones:
- Enhanced the quality of life for the communities we support, through the construction of six schools and infrastructure improvements in three additional educational institutions in rural areas of Colombia.
- Strengthened key skills and competencies, by delivering experiential workshops that promote values, personal growth and development.
- Expanded opportunities for pupils, through collaboration with local authorities to support their educational development.
- Empowered local communities, by fostering teamwork and encouraging active participation in self-managed initiatives.
- Improved school environments, through maintenance work and the provision of essential resources for learning spaces.
- Gained regional recognition, with the construction and full furnishing of our first school; an infrastructure project widely praised at department (regional authority) level.
PROVIDING SUPPORT ON AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE
The Building Schools programme has benefited multiple educational institutions, thanks to the support of various partners, including businesses, individuals, municipal administrations and school communities. Through this collaborative approach, the María Luisa de Moreno International Foundation has established itself as a coordinating body in combining efforts across partners.
To ensure compliance, all school construction and infrastructure projects adhere to Colombian regulations, including NTC 4595 and 4596 (Colombian Technical Standards for the design of school facilities), as well as standards set by the Colombian Ministry of National Education for the design of school facilities and learning environments.
SCHOOLS BUILT
More than just physical infrastructure, communities gain access to personal development projects, empowering them through inclusive and dignified educational spaces.
Since 2008, the Foundation’s work has transformed the quality of life for pupils and their families, strengthening their connection with their surroundings. This has been achieved through the construction of six schools and infrastructure improvements in a further three institutions.
Similarly, in response to the needs of children in India, the Foundation in England has partnered with its sister foundation in Switzerland and received support from Global Concerns India to provide school scholarships. These scholarships cover enrolment fees, monthly tuition, school supplies, and uniforms.
Whilst this programme currently only operates in Colombia, the Foundation in England has supported the development of the programme by providing technical aid and raising funds for learning materials for the pupils of these schools. During activities, such as the Cacao Ambassadors event, we seek to increase visibility and build support and interest for the programme’s mission to transform the lives of children in vulnerable communities through education and values.
