Sembrando Esperanza is a project led by the María Luisa de Moreno International Foundation, dedicated to the socio-environmental transformation of the Wayuu indigenous community in the Pulitchamana reserve. This project promotes biodiversity and the restoration of the environment, with the goal of ensuring food security for the community, which is part of the Ethno-Educational Centre #14, Pulitchamana campus, a school built by the Foundation in 2013.
¿Would you like to Sow Hope for biodiversity and communities in the dry ecosystem of La Guajira?
The protection of biodiversity is an urgent necessity, both in Colombia and around the world. Since the founding of our organisation, we have been committed to using education as a powerful tool to raise awareness and foster engagement. Through our programmes, we aim to strengthen the social and environmental capacities of communities.
Sustainable Environmental Modular Schools
We have implemented global environmental education initiatives based on strong values. In Colombia, we have built schools under the concept of Sustainable Environmental Modular Schools (MAS), where children and young people from rural and indigenous communities actively engage in caring for their surroundings through school-based environmental projects.
Además de su formación académica, los estudiantes participan en proyectos prácticos que refuerzan su conexión con el entorno natural:
- Creating sustainable school gardens
- Conserving green areas and local biodiversity
- Using renewable energy in schools
This project not only addresses the promotion of biodiversity and environmental restoration, but is also key to ensuring food security for the Wayuu community. The active participation of the community—especially women leaders—has been essential in achieving results such as soil regeneration, the planting of native trees, and the improvement of agricultural practices.
These actions not only contribute to a healthier environment, but also help the community improve its food self-sufficiency, ensuring that their basic needs are, to some extent, met.
Resultados
Improved Food Security
Crop diversification has increased the availability of food, providing families with a more varied and nutritious diet.
Increased Agricultural Production
The adoption of agroecological techniques has led to a significant boost in crop yields, supporting food autonomy and potentially creating additional income for some families.
Soil Recovery
Sustainable farming practices, such as crop rotation and the use of organic fertilisers, have contributed to the recovery of degraded soils, improving their structure and long-term fertility.
Community Participation and Empowerment
The active involvement of community members in every stage of the project has fostered a stronger sense of ownership and empowerment, strengthening the community’s ability to manage natural resources sustainably.
Impacting lives in La Guajira, inspiring other communities
The outcomes achieved in La Guajira serve as a model for replicating similar processes in other communities facing socio-environmental challenges.
